DAY 10

CHOJNA QUTA LAGOON (4,720 m) - JISTAÑA QUTA LAGOON (4,560 m)

In the morning we have two options: sunbathe on the shores of the lake or visit the Calzada summit. In this case we will climb to Lake Carizal, walk along its right bank and continue northeast to the Calzada summit (5,050 m), the lake is trapped between the Kasiri and Calzada massifs, at 5,857 and 5,650 m respectively. We return to Lake Chojña Khota.

After a good snack, the afternoon goal is to reach the open night camp located on the shores of Jistaña Khota lake. To get there we follow the route south and cross a pass at 5,100 m altitude. We continue a long descent into the valley until reaching the lake. Along the way the road is only dust and the landscape is a palette of gray tones! But the gray of these mountains is not pale at all, on the contrary…

DAY 11

Remembering the name of Lake Chiscacalliuani will not be easy. It will take 7 hours of walking and so we will be able to keep this name in our head: Chiscacalliuani, Chiscacalliuani, Chiscacalliuani…

We climb the slope westwards, then head south to the small lake Niquioyo Khota (4,672 m), dominated to the east by Condor Jipina (5,315 m). We continue along a balcony trail southeast, observing a wide panorama of the Altiplano and Lake Titicaca. The hike continues with more ups and downs to reach two summits, the first at 4,950 m and the second at 5,000 m. We finish the day descending steep rock to reach a closed valley that hosts a beautiful green lake, its name… we forgot!

After crossing the bofedales (marshland dotted with giant moss soaked with water), we descend southwest, then move southeast crossing several successive plateaus up to a summit at 5,000 m. While climbing, we observe the imposing Chachacomani glacier (6,074 m). Then a short descent will take us into the Pura Purani valley. We continue southeast along the slope to cross 3 small successive peaks and reach the Jayllawaya river valley (4,480 m).

The start of the day will be tough with a steep climb up to the upper plateau leading to Wara Warani Lake (4,620 m). From there the climb becomes gentler following the stream until reaching the valley bottom northeast. We cross a rock barrier to climb to Lake Wara Warani at 4,930 m. This lake lies at the foot of the Wara Warani glacier and is divided into two parts of different colors: turquoise waters on one side and deep blue on the other. Surprising and magical! After contemplating the beauty of the place, we must walk along the right side of the lake and climb southeast towards a steep pass (5,050 m) overlooking the Kunu Pampa glacier. The descent over rock, along the glacial tongue, takes us into an isolated valley at about 4,760 m. After crossing this valley, we continue southeast and face the last obstacle: Minchin peak (5,000 m). Once crossed, the descent will be easy to Khotia Lake (4,450 m).

DAY 14

KHOTIA LAGOON (4,450 m) - AJWANI LAGOON (4,615 m)

From Laguna Khotia the trail is well marked. This route towards Laguna Chiarkhota is the best known of the Cordillera Real. We start the day climbing the mountainside southwards. We reach Contador Pass (4,760 m), offering a beautiful view over a large valley sloping eastwards to the peaks. Here we can see a large lake called Alka Quta in the old Palcoco mine. It is through this valley one can reach the Santos refuge in the Qala Uta community through Chiqapa Pass. We, instead, continue across the Cordillera. Then we descend into the valley, crossing a semi-swampy area near Surakhota lagoon (4,410 m) before continuing southeast. Then we must climb the mountainside again before reaching Ajwani lagoon ("lagoon of birds", 4,615 m).

DAY 15

AJWANI LAGOON (4,615 m) - JURIKHOTA LAGOON (4,700 m)

Ajwani Lagoon is a beautiful lake where many ducks nest. A relaxing and lovely place to see. But we must continue on our way. We head southeast along the mountainside. There are still beautiful views of Lake Ajwani before passing into the next valley. We reach Col Milluni at 4,910 m before descending to Sistaña Lagoon (4,670 m). From the pass, Huayna Potosí and its famous west face are very close. We continue southeast, facing us. We climb a second pass, Janchallani Pass at 4,885 m, where we discover the Condoriri massif, one of the most beautiful glaciers in the Cordillera. Then we descend to Jurikhota Lagoon (4,700 m) nestled in a deep valley. The Cabeza del Cóndor and the Left Wing dominate the lake. We can see the trail running along the left side of the lagoon and up the moraine to the foot of the glacier. Stunning views. The next day promises to be splendid.

DAY 16

JURIKHOTA LAGOON (4,700 m) - ICE LAGOON - AUSTRIA PASS (5,140 m) - CHIARKHOTA LAGOON (4,680 m) - RINCONADA (4,505 m) - LA PAZ (3,600 m)

We start the day walking along the right shore of the lake northeast to reach the moraine. Then we climb to the Ice Lagoon at 4,880 m. The place is simply magical. The lagoon is splendid, with the Condoriri glacier ending its course in its turquoise waters. The vertical walls of the Left Wing and the Condor Head appear terrifying from our path. We take a long break to admire the view before continuing.

We turn southeast and climb the rocks to our right towards the hill. The ascent is quite steep and requires the use of hands and attention.

We reach Austria Pass at 5,140 m. If you still have strength, we highly recommend a detour through Pic Austria before entering the next valley. It is the rocky peak dominating the pass to your right. It faces Condoriri. It reaches 5,300 m. A steep ascent through scree, but worth it. Pic Austria is a real viewpoint of Condoriri. Views over the glacier massif are impressive. And the descent on scree is a true pleasure.

We then descend southeast from the pass to Chiarkhota Lagoon (4,680 m), base camp of Condoriri and Pequeno Alpamayo.

We descend on foot to La Rinconada to meet the vehicle, then drive to La Paz.
